PUKAPUKA - was referred to as Danger Island in the 18th century by foreign sailors, because of hazardous rocks that lie hidden just outside the reef, traditionally named Te Ulu-o-te-Watu ("head of the rock"), it also has the reputation for romance & adventure.

Pukapuka has three small islets called motus, a total land area of 1.9 square miles, and still supports around 660 inhabitants in three villages, with a good supply of fresh water [see large map for village locations].

Closer to Samoa than its capital, Rarotonga (820 miles), this atoll reflects the personality of its neighbors to the west. Originally settled in 1300 by Samoan forbears, which influenced customs and language, the current inhabitants are dependent on seasonal shellfish and fruit for their food supply. Flights from Rarotonga are available.
